CHAPTER 7

Two Storms

Sam

Will sat at a table, sculpting on one of the third-story balconies of the palace overlooking the garden. It was very warm out, especially for March 9th. Everyone welcomed the beautiful weather and was taking every opportunity to enjoy it. Allhaster had given us the challenge to try our hand again at pottery and sculpting in our spare time, and Will was obviously taking on the challenge at this moment as I sat down beside him to do the same.

“How’s, uh, your masterpiece comin’?” I started off the conversation.

He laughed slightly, “Barely started…. You think yours is gonna turn out?”

“D’know. I’ve never really done it before…. Actually, I doubt I ever have.”

“Look man,” he confronted me after a pause. “You just can’t hide a lot of things from me, I know ya too well … spill it.”

“Spill what?”

“Don’t be coy … y’know what I mean…. What’s the real reason you’re out here sculpting beside me? You don’t exactly enjoy that kinda thing a lot. I’ve got a guess, but I could be wrong.”

“Seeing as you knew I had something to say, I doubt you’re wrong in what you’re guessin’ I want to say.”

“All right, dude. Stop beatin’ ‘round the bush and spell it out.”

“‘Kay,” I gave in. “I’m nervous ‘cause, well…” by now I was breathing quite loudly and my heart was pounding, but, all the same, I felt the “peace that passes understanding” assuring me that I was doing the right thing. “I’ve gotta be really blunt and I hate doing that to you, but that seems as if that’s the only way to get through to you ‘bout this.”

“‘Kay,” Will exhaled. “It’s not a guess anymore … I know for sure what you’re gonna talk to me about … and maybe it’s time I listened. So, shoot … I’m ready,” he continued. “Don’t be afraid to be blunt … ‘cause, as much as I hate to admit that it’s true, I need it.”

“Okay,” I took a deep breath. “Here goes,” I paused and then just launched right in. “You’ve gotta do somethin’, bruh. Being one of the oldest in the Team, and the oldest of the four, automatically gives you a position of leadership whether you like it or not because we, who’re all younger than you, automatically look up to you. You’ve a got a huge responsibility and you’ve gotta be a man and live up to that. It’s hard, I know, but it brings rewards. As for forgiving the princes, if you take the first step, then the others are more likely to follow. And even if they don’t, you’ll know that you did the right thing.

“Man, you can trust me 100% on this—you don’t wanna miss your chance to make things right…. If you wait too long, it’ll be too late and you absolutely do not want that to happen. We’re gon’ into battle soon and no one except God knows who’s gonna make it through alive.” I could see that that possibility really hit home with Will.
